Buford Battle Flags

The original Buford Battle Flag carried by the Continental soldiers at the massacre was captured by Lt. Colonel Tarleton and the British Legion. The flag was sent back to Tarleton’s estate in England where is was displayed in private for over 225 years. Little was known of the flag’s existence until in 2006 the Tarleton family put the flag up for auction. The flag was displayed publicly at the Exchange Building in Charleston before Sotheby’s of New York led the auction. An anonymous buyer paid over 5 million to purchase the flags.
The main flag is of gold silk, depicting a beaver gnawing on a palmetto tree, the state symbol of South Carolina. The others are gold and blue silk, bearing the word “Regiment.”
