                      Battlefield Spring Cleanup

The Battlefield is cleaned up each year during late March or early April. The cleanup is done in coordination with the American Battlefield Trust's Park Day when battlefields all over the US are given a spring cleaning. This includes gathering up leaves, weed whacking, cutting brush, trimming and picking up fallen tree limbs. The Buford high school Jr. ROTC helps. During the cleanup, Friends of the Buford Massacre Battlefield president Ken Obriot makes sure all the ROTC participants are up to speed on the history of the battle. Volunteers from local communities are encouraged to participate in spring cleanup as well. Typically this is a 2- to 3-day event and help on any of those days is appreciated.

Memorial Celebration

On the Saturday before Memorial Day each year, the Sons of the American Revolution have their ceremony at the Battlefield to commemorate Memorial Day.  Friends of the Buford Massacre Battlefield participate in the S.A.R. ceremony and provide parking, crowd control, refreshments, and audio setup.

At the conclusion of the S.A.R. program Friends of the Buford Massacre Battlefield have their ceremony. Part of The Friends ceremony is the presentation of the Emily Carnes Franklin scholarship award given to the winner of the essay contest by Buford High School Jr. ROTC students.

Veterans Day                            The Friends commemorate Veterans Day with a ceremony at the Battlefield. Speakers have included the 5th SC congressional district representative Ralph Norman, SC state house representative Brandon Newton, and county officials, as well as local veterans who have told their inspirational stories of service. The patriots buried at Buford are among our country's first veterans.

Give Local Lancaster

The Friends participate in the once-yearly Give Local Lancaster fund-raising campaign for non-profits in Lancaster County.  This is an important source of operating funds for the Friends and we encourage all members to participate in this activity.
